June 21, 2021

The Mayan team shares some tips to increase product rank for your products on Amazon.

Selling on Amazon involves making decisions that increase the likelihood of new customers coming across your product listing in search results. Now, you may be asking yourself, “How do I make sure that my products rank?”

The Mayan team works to increase product rank for our clients on a daily basis. Keep reading for our top tips you should be thinking about when creating a new product listing.

Understand the A9 Ranking Algorithm

A9 is the name of the algorithm that Amazon created for product searches. It uses different data points to decide where products rank in it’s search results.

Here are a few key elements of the algorithm that you should keep top of mind when optimizing products to appear in search results:

  1. Relevance
  2. Availability
  3. Sales and Reviews

The most important thing we can stress is that at the end of the day, Amazon’s algorithm wants to show customers results that they know are going to increase sales not only for you, the seller, but for Amazon.

Relevance

When searching for a product, the first thing a customer will do is enter a keyword to take them to options for what they’re looking for. The simplest way to go about this is to enter keywords in all aspects of your product information (Title, Description, etc).

The more keywords you can incorporate into your product listing page, the more relevant your product will be in a given search. Use our checklist below when planning keyword strategy to ensure that you’re adding terms that areas that will help bring your product to the top of searches:

  • Keyword research - either independently or using a keyword search tool
  • Include top relevant keywords in: (i) Product title, (ii) Product description, (iii) Bullets
  • The most relevant keywords should appear first in order, being careful not to keyword stuff your titles (see more on this in the next step)
  • Utilize backend search terms to include multiple languages and misspellings of keywords typically used in your industry

Availability

This step may seem straightforward, but it’s something that can easily sneak up on a new seller. Having a solid back stock of inventory is absolutely critical when it comes to Amazon showing your products in organic search results.

Don’t forget about the key rule - Amazon wants to sell products that will sell. If they see that you’re out of stock, or even if you’re low on inventory, they are less likely to show your product to a potential customer.

To get ahead of this, work on forecasting your sales according to trends that may increase purchasing (seasonality, sales, etc), and keep on top of managing your inventory quantities.

Sales and Reviews

Past sales and customer feedback tie directly into Amazon’s A9 algorithm. They care about sending product search results to their customers that they know will create a positive buying experience. When a customer is happy with their order from you, the seller, they are also happy with Amazon as an ecommerce platform.

Amazon wants to know that if a customer purchases from you, they will receive the product they want, the quality they expect, and in a timely fashion. A few tips to ensure your sales and fulfilment methods fit the bill:

  1. Update your product images to show the product from multiple angles
  2. Respond to all public reviews, both positive and negative, to show you’re actively communicating with your customers.
  3. Sign up for a fulfillment service like Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). This will help you streamline your operations while also qualifying your products for Prime free 2-day shipping.

These tips together will create a flywheel that will increase your product ranking among the top search results. Need help getting started on your product ranking journey or one of the steps above? Contact the Mayan team today and chat with an expert.
